Jurassic World Breaks Box Office Records On Opening Weekend

Jurassic World will forever mark the first time a movie grossed more than $500 million worldwide in a single weekend, and chances are it will be a long time before that record is broken.

So why is it doing so well? Universal Pictures’ President of Domestic Distribution, Nick Carpou, offers a very simple explanation.

“Dinosaurs are fascinating to everyone,” he said. “It’s cross-cultural.”

“People should call dinosaurs the original superheroes,” added Exhibitor Relations Box Office Analyst Jeff Bock. “They are just as big as Iron Man or Superman or Batman right now.”

Whether or not it will become one of the highest grossing films of all time, only time will tell.

Avatar still holds that title at the moment, bringing in $2,787,965,087 worldwide. Right behind it is Titanic at $2,186,772,302 (James Cameron is a very rich man no doubt!), and the first Avengers movie at $1,518,594,910.

In general though, superheroes, pirates, teenage wizards, surly ogres, light saber-wielding Jedi’s and Disney characters dominate the “top 50 highest grossing films of all time” list.

Jurassic World (which is rated 7.7 on IMDb) is already only $250,000 short of making it into that top 50’s list before it’s even been in cinemas a week – and it doesn’t open in Japanese theaters until August, so that premier promises a boost in box office sales as well.

It’s also being reported that 48% of the opening weekend’s sales are from 3D showings, which makes sense really – if you’re going to pay to see a movie about rogue dinosaurs, you want to see their tails sweeping over the audience and their teeth biting down right over your head!

Reviews for the hit blockbuster are mostly very agreeable so far, but to make up your own mind you’ll have to see it for yourself!
