Olympic Qualifiers: Super Falcons in tight corner after Abuja draw

The Super Falcons of Nigeria are far from being sure of qualification for the women’s football event of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games after they could only manage a 1-1 draw against continental rivals Equatorial Guinea at the Abuja National Stadium on Saturday.

The Falcons, though in mourning mood following the demise of the team’s media officer, Gracious Akujobi, had planned to secure a comfortable win at home before heading out for the second leg.

The plan of the reigning African champions however fell flat as the team failed to build on the 25th minute lead they got courtesy of Halimat Ayinde.

The floundered chances by the Nigeria women was to later haunt them just after the hour-mark when Chinasa Okoro; one of the naturalized Nigerian players in the Equatorial Guinea team capitalised on a defensive error to snatch a point for the visitors.

That vital away goal now appears to have given the visitors some level of advantage ahead of the return leg which comes up on August 2 in Bata.

The Nigeria women who missed out of the London Olympics would need to really up their game if they are to compete in Rio.
