How to Use Google Maps Without An Internet Connection

You can search for nearby places and get driving directions while offline.

Losing your Internet connection while traveling can be frustrating, especially when you’re relying on your phone to tell you where to go. Whether you’re stuck in a subway car underground or have lost your signal while driving in a remote rural area, we’ve all be there at least once.

It’s a good idea to plan ahead for these types of situations by downloading maps for offline use in Google Maps. Once you’ve downloaded an area, you’ll be able to get directions and view points of interest for that region even without an Internet connection.

Still, there are some limitations to keep in mind. You can’t get walking, transit, or cycling directions while offline; only driving directions are available. If you’re not driving, using Google Maps offline can still be helpful for viewing nearby places when you’re stuck without a signal.

It’s also important to remember that these maps eventually expire because Google needs to update them to make sure they’re accurate. To see the areas you’ve saved and when they expire, open Google Maps, tap the menu icon, and select “Offline areas.”

Here’s how to download an offline map:

Launch the Google Maps app on your Android phone or iPhone. Make sure you’re signed into your Google account.Search for the city you’d like to download.Tap the bar at the bottom of the screen with the name of the place you’ve just searched for.Tap the button that says “Download.”Google will then show you a map of the area and ask if you’d like to download it. Tap “Download” again to confirm.

MicroSoft Windows 10 to 'automatically download' in 2016

Starting from next year Windows 10 will automatically download into all Microsoft computers and devices without the users knowledge.
This reports comes after the recent announcement of more than 110 million devices are already running Windows 10, which proves that the company’s latest OS is efficient.

Microsoft aim is to roll out the upgrade with the system settings changed into a “recommended update” and automatically download.

“Depending upon your Windows Update settings, this may cause the upgrade process to automatically initiate on your device, if you are on a metered connection on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, then you have the option of turning off automatic updates, we strongly discourage this in today’s connected world because of the constant risk of internet threats,” says Microsoft.

Xiaomi, leading smartphone company, unveiled their MIUI 7 OS today. MIUI 7 is the latest upgrade to its popular Android-based operating system. It includes several new features such as better performance, battery-saving optimizations and a wide variety of personalisation options.
Affordable and reliable data-savings on your phone
The feature we are most excited about in MIUI 7 is its Data Saver service, because it is powered by Opera Max compression technology.

Hugo Barro, VP Global at Xiaomi, says
“Our vision is bringing innovation to everyone. The Data Saver feature on our phones, powered by Opera, is a perfect example of how we apply this philosophy to our software and services. Opera Mini brings free Wi-Fi to 20 Indian cities

#FreeIceBox

This is one of the coolest thing I'd ever heard. Wish this could happen in Nigeria.
Mrunmaiy Abroal posted this on opera blog saying " This year marks Opera’s 20th anniversary. And, throughout these years, we’ve had a splendid time doing what we love the most – enabling more people, in more places to get the most out of internet access.
Building web browsers – that work on all kinds of mobile devices, get you online in any kind of network condition, save a lot of mobile data and help you make the most of your time online – is just one of the reasons users love Opera.
We see our 20th anniversary as yet another occasion for us to do something special for our users around the world.
Web on Wheels rolls out in India
In India, almost everyone has a mobile device that is capable of accessing the internet. But, did you know that only 19% of Indians use the internet? Many users are reluctant to use the mobile internet , due to a lack of awareness or concerns that using the mobile internet is too complicated.
Now, we could hardly leave that thought unaddressed in the minds of users from the country that is home to the largest number of Opera Mini users in the world!
Our desire to show people how easy it is to get online is our vision behind Web on Wheels. It features a specially-equipped WOW Car that provides free Wi-Fi. Over the next 10 months, the WOW Car will travel across India, covering 20 cities including Agra, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi and Allahabad. The car will be stationed at multiple locations throughout the city for 20 days each.
While the WOW Car is in their city, mobile users just need to approach it and connect to the Opera Wi-Fi connection to be able to browse for free for 20 minutes each day. There is no limit to the amount of data that can be used during this time or the websites and apps that can be used with this free internet service.
Roll up!
We want to bring the web to everyone and I’m confident that Web on Wheels will give that extra nudge to get newbies online. So, if you’re see the WOW Car in any of the cities, and you’ve been trying to get your parents, cousins or any other important people in your life to start using mobile internet, feel free to bring them by. Once they see how easy it is to get online and browse the internet, they’ll be convinced.
We are also looking forward to meeting you in person. So, come on over and enjoy the free Wi-Fi or just drop by to say hello!"

Isn't it cool? Common guys, opera is so cool.

How to Jailbreak iOS 8.4

This post explains in details how to jailbreak iOS 8.4 on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch using the TaiG v2.4 tool for Windows which was updated a few ago.

This tool is only available for Windows at the moment and supports the following devices:

iPhone 6 Plus
iPhone 6
iPhone 5s
iPhone 5c
iPhone 5
iPhone 4s
iPad Air 2/1
iPad 4/3/2
iPad mini 3/2/1
iPod touch 5

Supported iOS firmwares range from iOS 8.1.3 to iOS 8.4.

Here are the detailed steps:

1. Download TaiG tool from here. You should select the latest version.

2. Extract the executable file.

3. If you got you last iOS update through OTA, you should do a full restore through iTunes as explained on this page . Jailbreak doesn’t seem to work well with OTA updates. Things may go wrong. You can skip this step if your last restore was done through iTunes.

4. Disable “Find my Phone” by going toSettings > iCloud > Find My iPhone. Turn off the toggle.

5. Disable “Passcode Lock” & “Touch ID” unlock options by going to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode.

6. Connect your iPhone / iPad / iPod Touch to your PC and run the TaiG tool you extracted in step two.

7. The software should automatically detect your phone at this point. Preferably you may choose to uncheck the 3K Assistant as shown below.

8. Hit the Start button to initiate the process.

9. The jailbreak should take about 5 minutes. Your phone may restart about twice before the jailbreak completes.

Your device is now jailbroken. You can disconnect your launch Cydia to finish it up.

How to Downgrade iOS 9 Public Beta 1 to iOS 8.4

Downgrading iOS 9 public beta to iOS 8.4 is quite easy. I installed the public beta just to see the new changes in iOS 9 but I’ve been having some serious battery drain. I can’t complain, it’s called a beta software for a reason.

Here are the steps:

1. Backup your device through iTunes. It’s not enough to have just an iCloud backup.

2. Download iOS 8.4 for your device from this page. Be sure you choose the right one for your device.

3. Connect your phone and start iTunes. on the phone summary page, hold the SHIFT key on your keyboard and click theRestore button.

4. Select the IPSW file you download earlier from the download location.

5. Accept to restore when the prompt message comes up.

6. The process should take about 10 minutes or more.

7. After a while, the process should complete and your phone should show this if you have the right carrier SIM inserted:

8. It’s all done now. All you  need to do is choose your previous backup and restore:

Wait till it’s done before disconnecting your iPhone. This may take a while depending on how big your backup is.

Everything You Should Know About iOS 9 [Infographic]

iOS 9 is no longer news as people are now installing the first public beta on their devices. We recently published an article on  how to install this public beta and what it looks like on an old iPhone 4s. There hasn’t been major physical changes as witnessed on iOS 7 and this upgrade is focused more on performance.

However, there has been some new features here and there. For instance, Siri is now a lot more smarter than it used to be. The artificial intelligence now has answers to what she had no clue about before. Another major change is the new multitasking in the iPad. You can now simultaneously use two apps side by side on the screen, similiar to the way you multitask on our PC.

Everything you need to know about iOS 9 is summarized in this infographic by Nine Hertz.

So, I installed iOS 9 Beta 1 on my Old, Rusty iPhone 4s…

It came as a surprise when Apple announced that iPhone 4s would be getting an iOS 9 upgrade which was against earlier speculations. It was already assumed that just like iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and the rest devices that got dropped from getting updates at certain points in time, the iPhone 4s wasn’t going beyond iOS 8.

Updating iPhone 4s to iOS 9

However, when Apple announced that iOS 9 was more about optimizing the operating system for better performance and included iPhone 4s in the list of phones getting the upgrade, many 4s users who had been clinging on to the device despite seeing newer iPhones being released every year have one more good reason to hold on to the last surviving Apple 3.5″ device.

So, I took the plunge last night and installed iOS 9 public beta on my device and from all indications, I think I’m uninstalling it and going back to iOS 8.4 today.

iOS 9: First Impressions

Apple already said there hasn’t been much user interface overhaul in this update and this is true. The UI still looks almost exactly like iOS 8 but I could see some major changes I would actually describe as pleasant.

1. A tiny update to the keyboard

It’s one of the biggest annoyance on iOS especially if you type a lot but now, you can actually see if your keyboard is in uppercase or lowercase. The Shift key no longer just turns black or gray to indicate your keyboard is in lowercase or caps, the actual keyboard letters now show that.

iOS 9 new keyboard change

Not a big deal, right? Other mobile operating systems have had this in years but still, it’s new.

2. Search in settings

Another useful physical change I noticed is that you can actually now search in Settings.

iOS 9 – search in settings

Instead of navigating through the whole place looking for something, a simple search would bring it up.

3. Siri has a new look and now seems smarter

Siri has a new look and as you’ve probably heard, it’s a lot smarter than it used to be. Siri now has better results for natural language queries. You can just ask Siri to show you emails you ignored last week and you should see something like this:

iOS 9 – Siri

The search assistant is more proactive and it now searches deeper, it even searches in installed apps. You can even ask Siri to show you your selfies and she would do just that.

4. Notes Application

I stopped using iOS Notes some times back and switched to Google Keep but the last update to the Notes app might lure me back. The app now has a major user interface overhaul and new functionalities have been added.

iOS 9 revamped Notes application

You can now add pictures, properly format your notes and more.

5. A better organized gallery

I checked the Photos app and noticed things look much better now. There’s a screenshots album and a selfies album.

iOS 9 Photos app

6. Multitasking

On the iPad, multitasking has been taken to a whole new level and there’s a new feature called “Split View”. This lets you run two apps concurrently and share the screen at the same time just like you can do on desktop computers. However, this feature isn’t present on iPhone 4s as expected.

iOS 9 multitasking on iPhone 4s

iPhone 4s may run iOS 9 but it definitely won’t get all the features you’ll find in new generation Apple devices.

Maybe you shouldn’t upgrade just yet

The changes look cool but remember, this is a beta software upgrade and things may go wrong. Your apps may not really work as they should and even if you’re going to do this, it’s best done on a device you don’t use often.

My iPhone 4s is only a secondary device and I’m seeing issues already. The battery drain is something else and I’ll probably go back to iOS 8.4 before the end of the day.

How to Install iOS 9 Public Beta 1 on Your iPhone / iPad

For the first time, anyone can install an Apple beta software upgrade without being a developer. In the past, only developers have access to beta iOS upgrades but right now, there’s a public beta for iOS 9 you might want to try out.

iOS 9

Although this upgrade is out for anyone to install, it doesn’t really mean that it’s ready to be used. As a matter of fact, you’re strongly advised not to install it on your primary device. Don’t install it on the device you use from day to day as things may go wrong and your apps may not really work the way they should.

There’ll be bugs. You should know that.

How to get started

1. First, go to Apple’s Beta Software Program page and Sign Up.

Apple beta Software Program

2. Sign in with your Apple ID, preferably the same Apple ID you use on your device (if you have multiple accounts).

3. Accept the terms and conditions when you’re done reading through.

4. Connect your phone to iTunes and make sure you backup. Don’t just rely on iCloud backup, be sure you have a local backup done through iTunes

5. Launch Safari on your iOS device and visit beta.apple.com/profile. Login with your Apple ID if you’re prompted and scroll down to step 2 (Download Profile) to download the needed configuration profile to your device.

Download iOS 9 Public Beta 1 Profile

6. Choose to install the profile and enter your PIN if asked. After installing the profile, restart your device.

7. Restarted? Now go to Settings > General > Software Update. My iPhone 4s was already trying to download the update because I was connected to a WiFi.

iOS 9 Public Beta 1 update downloaded

The update is almost finished. Just click Install Now and wait till the whole thing is done.

The whole point of downloading a public beta is to give your feedback to Apple and when you’re done installing the upgrade, you should see a new Feedback application on the springboard. Some of your apps may not work correctly and this should be expected. A beta software is an unfinished software, it is a work in progress.

No prompt to install iOS 9 after profile download?

In case you didn’t get the prompt to install iOS 9 after you’ve downloaded the beta profile, there could be two explanations:

1. You’re running an iOS version lower than iOS 8.1.3

2. Your device is jailbroken.

I didn’t get it the first time because I was running a jailbroken iOS 8.1. I had to restore iOS 8.4 without jailbreak before I could go to iOS 9 Public Beta 1.

How to Unlock Glo, MTN and Airtel Stubborn Huawei E303 USB Modem

I’ve already posted an article how to unlock  Huawei modems easily by generating the unlock code using the IMEI but this doesn’t work with newer versions of Huawei modems like E303. There’s also a post I published earlier on how to unlock USB modems with DC client unlocker but that method doesn’t seem to work with the Huawei E303 being issued by Nigerian networks like MTN, GLOBACOM and Airtel over the last few months. Though I have an older version, Huawei E173, which I easily unlocked without any complications, I was forced to unlock a friend’s MTN Huawei E303 modem over the weekend. It’s an MTN modem and none of my existing softwares worked, I had to buy some credit from DC Unlocker. Unlocking it isn’t hard so far you know the right steps to follow but you must have a PayPal account to get this done (till a free software that does it is released). If you don’t have a PayPal account, you should check the last part of this article.

Buying Credits from DC Unlocker

Before buying any credit, you should first know the exact amount of credit needed to unlock to your device. For Huawei E303, it’s only 4 credits though it varies for different devices. You can check how much credit is needed for your device unlock here.

– To purchase credits, go to this page

– Fill the form correctly with the amount of credit you need.

– Last time I checked, they sell one credit for one euro. So, 4 credits should be pretty close to $6 when converted by PayPal. Hit the PayPal button on the next page.

– Log in to PayPal, make the transaction and when you get redirected to DC Unlocker website, the displayed page shows your chosen username and your given password. Be sure to copy this to a notepad and save right away.

Unlocking your Huawei E303 Modem

– Download the latest version of DC Unlocker client here and install.

– Connect your modem and run the software. Be sure you close the default dashboard software for your modem.

– Select your device model from the drop-down menu and then click on the magnifying glass icon to allow the program detect your device

– Now click Server and enter your username and password under login options, click on check login.

– With that in place, select Unlocking and simply hit the “Do job” button.

– As shown above, the modem was unlocked successfully.

You can now use any SIM on your Huawei E303 modem. You can as well use this method to unlock any other USB modem so far it’s supported by the unlocker. If you’re using a ZTE modem, you can  unlock the modem for free.

Also, if you’re in Nigeria and do not have a PayPal account since it’s unsupported here, you can contact the local dealers listed on DC unlocker website. If you have questions, you can let me know through the comment box.
